Education Day at Maker Faire Bay Area 2011 (video)

Maker Faire Education Day is opportunity for schools from near and far to bring their students to a sneak preview of Maker Faire. Some of our most engaging makers hosted 1600 kids and everyone had an amazing time. The students roamed from exhibit to exhibit learning about physics, chemistry, and technology. They interacted with electronic giraffes, robots, remote control cars, pedal powered devices and contraptions, electronic textiles, even Tesla coils.

Maker Faire Bean Bag Chairs

makerfaire_beanbags.jpg

If you stopped by the Make and Craft stages this weekend at Maker Faire, I hope you had the chance to relax in one of our giant tie-die bean bags. We got a lot of folks asking where we got them - I'm happy to report we rented them from Hartmann Studios. Sounds to me like we need to figure out a way to create a giant, tie-dye bean bag chair cover tutorial Craft!

May Birthday Giveaway: lovely tea towels from mirror mirror

What?s going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you. Today I've got a set of colorful Atelier LZC Tea Towels [1] from the mirror mirror [2] shop, which currently spans both the UK and the US. I known Paola [3] because I read that she moved with her family from London to my old neighborhood here in Seattle so I sent her a very long email describing where I thought the best food shops and parks were. Happily she didn't think I was a crazy person and I've had an excuse to visit my old home, including this one bakery that makes good soups, ever since. I absolutely love the way she has curated what is offered in her shop, and I continue to have a crush on the stacking egg cups [4] which are, if you'll allow me, the most practical of all egg cups I've seen. If you'd like these two lovely French-designed tea towels to grace your kitchen please leave a comment with this entry, and if you'd like something to chat about (I love reading all the comments) answer this question: Have you ever been to a high tea? I have, twice, and I have to say I found the little sandwiches confounding each time. Your turn, you've got until Saturday, May 28th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [5] applies. Good luck! thing I like: MIA boots

[1] This year I decided to get a pair of knee high boots. I'm short so I was trying to stay away from boots with big details because I feel like they would overwhelm me. I could be wrong but I like to work my way up to things. I chose these MIA 2 Pali Boots [2] and they've become my favorites. We went away last weekend and I only brought these and a pair of flip flops for the pool, this is saying something as I nearly always over pack shoes just in case. The soles of these are flexible rubber that is just bouncy enough and they've never given me blisters. The zippers are on the outsides of the legs and are a nice chunky weight. The detail that really sold me, though, was that the snap closure on the sides holds down the zipper pull. The boots are made of thin leather and do crumple a bit at the ankle, no more or less than any other pair of boots but the smooth ankle shown in the picture isn't how they actually look when worn. [3] Above: my feet on the dining room table, that is a large copper cookie cutter of the Eiffel Tower which I have to return to a friend there in the background. I really like that the folds over the vamp break up the line of the foot and give it a cute edge, I think they make my feet look smaller. (I know I'm the only one noticing the size of my feet, but still.) They are on sale right now and I almost want to buy a pair in the dark or light brown color. [4] If I'd been paying closer attention I would have seen these similar but higher quality MIA Women's Bridgeport Riding Boot [5], which are on sale for almost half price right now. I'd buy these in a second if they were still available in my size. Maybe in tan. Darn. (Ooh, they are still available here [6] in my size. Tempting. Seeing how much I like the other pair I think these would be worth it.) Quick note: The Amazon and Endless links above are affiliate links, which means should you choose to buy something I get a small percentage which goes to help cover hosting costs for this here website. This is the sediment that is left after you pour a bottle of Russian River Supplication Ale [1]. It's brewed with sour cherries and strains of bacteria and aged for a year in a Pinot Noir barrels. It's delicious, sour and complex, and it's expensive, but so worth it. [1] http://russianriverbrewing.com/pages/brews/barrel.html
