May Birthday Giveaway: ABC poster from Matthew Porter

What's going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you. Yay! Today I have the ABC Poster [1] from Matthew Porter [2] to give away. Matthew Porter is a Seattle illustrator and childrens book author whose distinctive style has become familiar to our household, we've bought several of his books for our niece and nephews. His wife, Andrea, is the administrative side of the business (and since I work with her in the GBA [3] I can tell you she is a force). They owned the Bluebottle art gallery here in Seattle for eight years. In addition to his books [4] he sells original art [5] and onsies, hoodies and posters in the shop [6]. His most familiar character is a monkey and his book Monkey World [7] is a lot of fun, I have to admit we read through a few times before mailing it off to our niece and nephew. I absolutely love that Matthew offers his top 10 childrens books for inspiration (bottom half of the page), there are a few books there I just barely remember. If you'd like to win the ABC poster please leave a comment with this entry. You have until 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 18th to enter, the fine print [8] applies. If you'd like something to mention here is a question to answer: Did you have a book as a kid that you remember to this day? Mine was Dr. Seuss's The First of Octember, because my birthday falls early in October and I was fascinated by the idea that there might be a month in there somewhere I hadn't been told about! Alright, good luck. Closed, thanks for entering! How-To: Sew a Feather Mowhawk

Matt Borgatti writes:

Do you need to achieve maximum stopping power at a party? Perhaps something striking for the burn? Or possibly it's just a few extra inches of height? Regardless, a feather mohawk is a powerful statement of your inner awesomeness manifested on your head for all to see. They're pretty easy to make and inexpensive if you know where to get the materials.

How To: Organize Items "Just Passing Through" Your Studio

transient_item_storage.jpg

This is such a practical, simple and brilliant idea. Amy from The Red Chair Blog shows how she built this tower for about $35.00 in materials. The idea is to use it for all those items you need to take somewhere else (like library books), or you need to donate, or you plan to give away.

My office gets so cluttered with stuff I need to deal with in these ways. What a great way to keep things tidier - and to goad me into actually dealing with them once the boxes get full!

TV-B-Gone Jacket

Whenever I bring my TV-B-Gone out to restaurants, I look suspicious pointing it around. So I embedded the device into a jacket and turned it into a wearable TV silencer. For the switch, I sewed paths of conductive thread that become bridged by the metal zipper pull when it passes by. At the restaurant or bar, all I have to do is unzip my jacket to turn off the TV(s).

For this project you need:

  • Super TV-B-Gone Kit (available from Maker Shed)
  • conductive thread
  • jacket with metal zipper pull
  • sewing needle and regular thread
  • seam ripper (or very small scissors)
  • tailor's chalk
  • soldering iron/solder
  • pliers
  • wire strippers
  • wire snips
  • insulated wire (stranded)
  • heat shrink tubing

Check out the complete a complete step-by-step tutorial for the previous version of this project, the TV-B-Gone Hoodie, over on Make: Projects.

Decidedly Delicious Vegan Benedict

veganbenedicts.jpg

It's been a crazy day for me today- I seemed to loose time with all the things I was taking care of. My favorite meal when I'm feeling like this is Breakfast for Dinner. This Instructable for Vegan Benedicts looks amazing, and I have all the ingredients in my kitchen right now!
