The Uncollection: Giving New Identity to Stuff You Already Own

One of my favorite places to find unique upcycled projects is Unconsumption, a Tumblr blog run by a small volunteer team that's dedicated to creative re-use. They've recently embarked on a very interesting effort to build an Unconsumption brand - they've released their logo under Creative Commons license, and are asking crafters and makers to apply that logo to stuff they already own. All these products-that-aren't-really-products are being gathered as The Uncollection.

I had a chance to contribute my own project to The Uncollection recently, and asked Rob Walker, founder of Unconsumption, contributor to The New York Times Magazine and the author of Buying In: The Secret Dialog Between What We Buy and Who We Are, to tell us more about this effort. If you'd like to join in the fun, read on!

How To: Organize Items "Just Passing Through" Your Studio

transient_item_storage.jpg

This is such a practical, simple and brilliant idea. Amy from The Red Chair Blog shows how she built this tower for about $35.00 in materials. The idea is to use it for all those items you need to take somewhere else (like library books), or you need to donate, or you plan to give away.

My office gets so cluttered with stuff I need to deal with in these ways. What a great way to keep things tidier - and to goad me into actually dealing with them once the boxes get full!

Home all summer long? Long days with kids seem too much? You need to outside get some backyard activities happening. I am a big believer in getting outdoors in all weather – rain, wind or sunshine. If you have a backyard or a park or have access to an oval or woods then the easiest [...]

Suzy Ultman for Robert Kaufman

suzyultman_fabric1.jpg

I spent the weekend geeking out over all-things craft at the first-ever Midwest Craft Caucus in Columbus, Ohio. I'll report back on the conference, but I just had to share one of my favorite goodies I received - tiny fabric samples from Suzy Ultman's line for Robert Kaufman. Just a reminder that good things really do come in small packages! I picked up a sample of Licorice and Bright from the Metro Cafe and Appleville lines. Now, the hard part - what to make with it?!
