May Birthday Giveaway: Grow Great Grub

Today I've got a copy of Grow Great Grub [1]: Organic Food from Small Spaces by Gayla Trail. This book has a perfect combination of the information you need to grow your own food in containers, planting beds or community gardens, what to plant, how to care for it, and heaps of beautiful photographs to inspire you. I'm very intimidated by gardening and I find this book to be comforting. She covers everything I might like to grow but doesn't bury me in too many options. There are even recipes, tips on keeping or preserving and a section on how to can. This book is both a great place to start, and has lots of information for those gardeners who are looking to polish their food growing skills. And if you don't already follow it Gayla's site You Grow Girl [2] is full of great information. Gayla is one of those people whom I've known online for years and years. (I find myself saying that a lot lately!) If you'd like to win a copy of You Grow Girl please leave a comment with this post. You've got until Tuesday, May 17th at 10am PST to enter, the fine print [3] applies. Here is something to talk about if you'd like: Have you ever eaten anything you grew yourself? I am terrible with plants so the most I've managed is using my own rosemary and thyme, but my dad is a gardener and grows blueberries and wild strawberries (which are delicious). Ok, good luck! Closed! Thanks for entering. [1] http://www.growgreatgrub.com/ [2] http://www.yougrowgirl.com/ [3] http://www.notmartha.org/the-fine-print/

HP Project Runway challenge, episode 3: the one with stilts

This week the challenge was to create a dramatic look to be worn while on stilts. Stilts! It was also a group challenge, so Scott and I worked together. In the fantasy Project Runway thing I have going on herd he has immunity since winning last week [1], so I was feeling some real pressure. We came up with the look above, dramatic suit. Or something. It was inspired by Mary Poppins: (Image above from Disney.) Instead of creating the orange suit, which I was all for, we chose a warm gray with a touch of orange in the shirt. We were judged to be in the middle which was good enough for us. Our look was boring but well made. Our model could simply be a very, very tall girl heading to work anticipating a high pressure meeting. We might or might not have had huge married couple screaming fights during this challenge but the audience will never know since the cameras were all over the Bert and Viktor [2] pairing. Our model looked a little bit like Jack Skellington [3] coming down the runway but luckily she didn't get the pumpkin hair [4], whew! Here, in pen and paper sketches, is how we actually came around to Mary Poppins: This is my first idea. Like many of the contestants I took one look at the stilts and thought circus! Scott [5] had something out of China in mind. That cat earred squiggle thing? If this hadn't been a group challenge that is probably what he would have put down the runway just to show off his immunity. We tried to do a form fitting dress over pants thing work. Maybe without sleeves? Then we gave up and tried to figure out if we could make really, really long flare jeans work. Then we looked at our sketches again and Scott liked the fitted thing but wondered if we could make it more like Mary Poppins. And so we did. Or at least we tried. And now the answer to what we all want to know. What are the doodles on Scott's paper? A cat and a sea serpent/unicorn? I think? Previously: we took on episode one [6], the one with the bed sheets, and episode two [7], the one with the dog toys. And another huge shoutout to HP [8] for sending me the TouchSmart computer [9]. Its big bright screen has seduced me. Today I found myself surfing sites with one hand (you can scroll a browser page just but drawing your finger up or down on the screen) while I scanned sketches with the other hand. It is surprising how quickly I took to abandoning the mouse for the touch controls. [1] http://www.notmartha.org/archives/2011/08/08/hp-project-runway-challenge-epis... daily-ish photo: bacon maple bar from Frost

We found ourselves out near Frost Donuts [1] (a short drive away from Seattle) so we stopped in. I'd read a lot about it but I wasn't prepared for how amazing the donuts look [2] (take a peek at that Aztec Chocolate, go on), how adorably designed the shop was, and how really, really good the donuts were. I didn't mean to eat this whole one but I did. We are definitely going to find a reason to swing by again soon. [1] http://www.frostology.com/ [2] http://www.frostology.com/menu.aspx
