How-To: Helmet Mohawks

Sean @ MAKE posted up these festive bike helmet mowhawks:

A commenter on yesterday's CRAFT-y Bike Projects round-up alerted me to the DIY bike helmet mohawk phemonenon. Those pictured at left are from 2009 by Instructables user dan. The bright orange model is made from cable ties. To lower right is a helmet mohawk made with scrub-brush bristles by Instructables user jujitsu-mam. Upper right is a photograph sumbitted by the commenter, himself.

One of the most fun and exciting hands-on areas at Maker Faire is Swap-O-Rama-Rama. It's thrilling to see large groups of people transforming old pieces of clothing in to new and fabulous projects. The call for artists to assist in Swap-O-Rama-Rama at Maker Faire Bay Area is officially open. From our friends at Swap-O-Rama-Rama:

Swap-O-Rama-Rama is a giant clothing swap and series of do-it-yourself workshops in which a community explores reuse and creativity through the recycling of used clothing. At Swap-O-Rama-Rama, consumers are taught to be creators and this transformation takes place through the local talent in the community. Swap-O-Rama-Rama is seeking artists of ALL calibers, recyclers and creatives of all kinds for the following roles: artist taught DIY workshops, designer run sewing stations, silk screening, reuse designers for a recycled fashion show, sorters (get first dibs on clothes) and general help.

DIY Workshops: If you have a unique skill that transforms would be trash into a wearable item (clothing/jewelry/handbag etc.) please consider sharing this at Swap-O-Rama-Rama in the form of a DIY workshop. Even if you are a beginner, please consider sharing your skills!

Sewing Station/Fashion Show: If you are a whiz behind a sewing machine and work with reuse, consider being a Swap-O-Rama-Rama designer helping people learn how to mod the used clothing they find at the swap. And join the Swap-O-Rama-Rama fashion show and show off your creations.

Silk Screen Crew: If you are a silk screener and would like to join the silk screening crew, offering your fresh designs to bring used clothes back to life, please get in touch!

Sorting Crew: If you know pants from a shirt, come and help us sort clothing! ...and you get first dibs!

Contact Erin E Scholl at erinescholl [at] gmail [dot] com to participate.

daily photo: Mar. 11th

[1] My internet has been nonexistant today so I'm sending this from my iPhone. This is a photo of the bolognese I started at 10am. I'm starting to suspect the recipe author and I have different definitions of "a low simmer". Still, I think given enough time it might be impossible (perhaps Megan proof?) for a bolognese to turn out badly. It would be easier to pass the time if I has the Internet to amuse me. So far I've cleaned the house and washed the dishes and practiced with eyeshadow to create a smoky eye (it's not supposed to make me look like I'm upset, right?) and I've even sorted some kitchen cabinets. The Internet better return or I'll have my tax preparation done before the day is out. [1] http://www.flickr.com/photos/notmartha/5518664104/

Make: Live is Tonight! Episode 07: Karts & Wheels

Make: Live airs tonight! Don't miss our Karts & Wheels episode where guests Mark Frauenfelder, Jared Ficklin, Nick Raymond and Eric Chu join us with projects from the latest MAKE. We'll also be giving away some tools from Digi-Key to one lucky member of the chat.

Make: Live 07 - Karts & Wheels
Wednesday April 27th, 9pm ET/6pm PT
Watch at makezine.com/live or on UStream
Please join us in the UStream chat or mark tweets with #makelive to interact live with the show.

Featuring the lovely and talented:

Drill Kart - MAKE interns
In a visit to MAKE HQ in Sebastopol, CA, Becky gets a tour of the cordless drill-powered go-kart designed by Gever Tulley. Watch MAKE interns Nick Raymond and Eric Chu pull some sweet spin moves. It's really fun to drive!

Flame Tube - Jared Ficklin
See sound in fire! The flame tube project (aka Rubens' tube) uses a speaker at one end to influence the row of small propane jets along the tube, showing the waveforms of the audio. We'll have the project set up on the roof. Rubens' tube aficionado Jared Ficklin joins us via Skype from Austin, Texas to take your questions and show off some in-progress tubes.

Due to some unforeseen circumstances, Bill Gurstelle could not be with us during the broadcast as previously announced. Look out for him on an upcoming episode!
