Create Green Cat Toys

ronnie_cat_toys.jpg

Yes, my cat is a member of Catster (that's Ronnie, above, with some of her favorite toys). And it's a good thing, too. If she wasn't, I wouldn't have come across this post on how to make your own green-themed cat toys, such as turning old business cards into cat-ready fans. The post has a few quick projects to make when your cat has, once again, lost all her toys and won't leave you alone.

How-To: Make a Steampunk Mr. Potato Head

steampunk_potatohead.jpg

Instructables member saritamarianyc took a Mr. Potato Head, and with the aid of some Sculpey Premo, household junk, a hot glue gun, and some paints, completely steampunk-ified it. That monocle makes me giggle with glee every time I look at it.

Want to see how she did it?

daily photo: Mar. 8th

I left the house and didn't bring a coat with me today, it was gloriously sunny and warmish. People in Seattle talk about the weather too damn much, and this time of year I find myself doing it as well. We have mild winters without much snow and while I appreciate the lack of icy roads the downside is seemingly endless stretches of gloomy overcast skies. Generally I like the excuse to stay all cozy indoors and do repetitive things (knitting, video games, drinking, obsessing) but the mood stealthily swings into desperation sometime in late February. Its around this time of year that I get nostalgic for Cleveland's snowy winters because at least they broke up the winter into an array of difficult weather that brought new and exciting things to have to deal with. In contrast we here in Seattle tend to be very enthusiastic when the sun is out, like today. Especially when you check Twitter to find that a friend like A Chow Life [1] reports: "I just looked at the 10 day forecast. Rain-- every single day." Then you hastily take a photo of the all too soon setting sun bouncing against a wall so you can remember what it felt like when Friday of next week rolls around and you start to suspect you're actually stuck in some creepy sunshine-less experiment. In less Need To Snap Out Of It news, today I bought a giant plastic egg for what I hope will become a neat-o Easter thing. We'll see. [1] http://achowlife.com/

Wall Monogram with Plaster Letters

In today's CRAFT Video, I show you how to make custom plaster letters to represent your loved ones in your home. My husband, Will, and I were given gold letters to represent our initials awhile ago, and we have been looking for complimentary vintage letters for Milo and Gracie (our beloved pups).

When I came across this tutorial for DIY Plaster Letters by Arounna Khounnora of Bookhou on Poppytalk, I couldn't resist making my own.

Voila!.jpg

I love how they turned out! You can paint them or wrap them in a vintage map or cool fabric, but I dig the industrial white look. What initials would you make, and for whom?

Lego Space Helmet Reads Comics as You Wear it

lego_helmet_comic.jpg

Although it's just a concept design for now, this prototype Lego space helmet that reads comics as you wear it is very exciting. From designer Jonathan Robson, the helmet would work by downloading audio tracks for a Lego comic book on to a USB stick, using a code on the cover. The USB stick would then insert in to the helmet, where it would play through ear pieces on the inside, allowing kids to follow along in the comic book while looking totally awesome in a Lego space helmet. I love this idea, mostly because I'd just love to walk around in a Lego space helmet, but also ... ya know ... for my kids. Yeah. For the kids. You can download a sample comic PDF and listen to audio tracks over on Robson's web site. [via Ohdeedoh]
